Intro
The first layer makes or breaks a print. If it doesn’t stick, nothing else matters. Here’s how to make adhesion predictable.
Surface prep
- Wipe PEI/glass with isopropyl alcohol before each print.
- Avoid touching the bed; skin oils sabotage adhesion.
- Deep clean occasionally with mild detergent (when cool, plate removed).
Level & Z-offset
- Level hot at print temps.
- Set Z so lines are touching with a slight squish.
- Recheck after plate swaps or moving the printer.
First-layer settings
- Layer height 0.2–0.3 mm
- First-layer speed 20–30 mm/s
- Extrusion width 120–150%
- Raise bed temp +5 °C for the first two layers
Adhesion helpers
- Brims for small footprints
- Rafts as a last resort
- Glue stick as release agent for PETG on PEI
Environment
- Avoid drafts; use an enclosure for ABS/ASA
- Keep room temp stable
FAQ
Elephant foot? Lower bed temp after layer 2 or add a 0.3–0.5 mm chamfer in CAD.
Corners lifting? Add brims, increase bed temp, slow the first layer.
Wrap-up
Clean surface, careful leveling, and gentle first layers produce dependable adhesion—print after print.
